KN Singh did not like it and gave up his intention to become a lawyer.
Then made up his mind to go to the army. He was also a good sportsman. He was also elected to the Javelin throw and shot put at the 1932 Berlin Olympics. But in those days, he had to go to Kolkata because his sister became seriously ill. He could not go to the Olympics. At the same time, he met family friend Prithviraj Kapoor. He introduced Singh to director Devaki Bose. In 1936, Devaki gave him a negative role in his film 'Sunhara Sansar'. This was his first break.The immense success of Baghban in 1938 made him one of the biggest villains in Hindi films.

He dominated Hindi films from 1940 to 1970. His strong role films were: Sikander (1941), Jawar Bhata (1944- Dilip Kumar's first film), Humayun (1945), Awara (1951), Jala (1952), CID (1956), Howrah Bridge (1958) ), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), Amrapali (1966) and An Evening in Paris (1967). His other popular films were: Woh Kaun Thi, Mere Huzoor, Jigri Dost, Do Chor, Hathi Mere Saathi, Laughing Wounds, Loafer, Kachche Dhaag, Pagla Kahin Ka, Liar Kahi Ka and My Life Partner.
He was the eldest of his siblings. Due to lack of children, he had adopted Pushkar, the son of his brother Bikram Singh (former Editor of Filmfare). Pushkar is a television serial producer.The final years of KN Singh were painful. His eyesight was completely gone. He died on 31 January 2000 at the age of 91 in Mumbai.
